The Evening Star Blog
Our Future Use of the Retro Engine® Name
From 2019 through 2024, we at Evening Star referred to our in-house 3D engine and SDK used to develop Penny’s Big Breakaway as “Star Engine” and “StarSDK”.
Prior to Penny’s release, Evening Star’s Retro Engine® was used in the development of multiple commercial game titles, including Sonic Mania™ (2017) and Sonic Origins™ (2022). Through its inclusion in titles like these, the Retro Engine® gained a reputation as a world-class engine for 2D pixel art games.
While we continued to develop our 2D and 3D engine capabilities over the years, we did so as separate game engine products. Now, as we move into the 7th major version of the engine (Retro Engine® Version 7), we have decided to unify our 2D and 3D technology into a single engine.
In 2024, Evening Star successfully completed registration of the Retro Engine® trademark with the United States Patent and Trademark Office. From this day forth, in order to reflect our development priorities, to recognize our engine’s history, and to capitalize on the strength of the Retro Engine® brand, Evening Star is moving away from further use of the “Star Engine” name.
To that end, Evening Star is retroactively referring to the engine and SDK used to develop Penny’s Big Breakaway as “Retro Engine® Version 6” and “RSDK™ v6” respectively.
Incidentally, another game company, Cloud Imperium Games, develops a separate game engine named STARENGINE™. To alleviate any possible confusion, Evening Star acknowledges Cloud Imperium Games’ rights pertaining to the use of the STARENGINE™ trademark.
